Being rude to wait staff has been branded a cheap way for people to try and make themselves feel important.

British actress Millie Bobby Brown has said she 'hates' being made wait in restaurants for food.

Speaking on the Table Manners podcast last week, the Stranger Things star said she'll normally look at the menu on the way to the restaurant.

"You know what I hate? Waiting a really long time to order," Brown said.

"I've already looked at the menu in the car on the way here and when they're like, 'We’ll just get your drinks orders and then come back', I’m like, 'No, no, no, stand here, let’s just take the whole thing. It will make your life easier'.

"And that's the same thing about the bill," she added.

Irish Independent Columnist Tanya Sweeney told Newstalk Breakfast there's really no excuse.

"Millie Bobby Brown is 20 so I'm cutting her a bit of slack in this regard," she said.

"She checks the menu and decides what she's ordering on the way to a restaurant.

"Most of us who live in the real world and go to restaurants, we do so because it's a treat [and] part of our leisure time.

"We're not just there to refuel and then bugger off somewhere else. We're there to be doted on a little bit by staff".

'Shooting fish in a barrel'

Ms Sweeney said wait staff can't say anything or they'll risk losing their jobs.

"There's a power imbalance in so far as these people are contractually obliged to stand there and take your crap," she said.

"If they stand up for themselves on a personal level they will probably lose their jobs.

"It's almost like shooting fish in a barrel and it's a really cheap way, I think, to assert that you're important," she added.

Don't forget to tip as well.
