The largest chain of ice cream shops in the world says it wants to open up new stores in Ireland.

Baskin-Robbins is looking for a group to buy into the franchise and set up in the Republic and the North.

The firm is looking to grow its presence in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Waterford, Wexford and Belfast.

The company says this is part of an ongoing strategy to increase its presence across Europe.

In a statement, it says: "The brand is seeking two franchise groups to develop five locations in The Republic of Ireland and three shops in Northern Ireland over the next several years, or a single group for the entire territory".

"Ideal licensee candidates will have strong financial backgrounds, knowledge of their local consumers and a proven track record of success in the restaurant industry".

Jeremy Vitaro, vice president of international development for Dunkin’ Brands, says: "Ireland represents a tremendous opportunity for Baskin-Robbins as we look to continue growing the brand internationally".

Baskin-Robbins has more than 7,500 locations in nearly 50 countries world-wide.

The brand currently has over 500 restaurants across Europe - including more than 140 in the UK.

Baskin-Robbins, part of the Dunkin' Brands Group, was named the top ice cream and frozen dessert franchise in the US by Entrepreneur magazine in 2014.
