The death toll from a massive mudslide in the US state of Washington has risen to eight.

Officials say more than 100 other people remain missing or unaccounted for after a wall of mud hit a small town north of Seattle at the weekend.

At least 30 homes were destroyed.

The landslide was triggered after rain-soaked embankments gave way on Saturday morning.

Snohomish County emergency management director John Pennington said construction workers were among the missing, along with passing motorists.

The search for victims resumed early Monday after bad conditions forced rescuers to suspend their efforts late on Sunday. Reports say some workers had to be dragged to safety.

In a statement, Snohomish County said "The number of land parcels possibly affected by the slide is at least 112 of which at least 49 had some form of structure, which could include homes".

It added that more flooding is expected, as water from the river is trickling through the slide and creating a new river channel.

It says names or information about those who are believed to be missing, as well as those who are deceased, are not being released.
