By-election campaigner John McDermott has reported Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan to Gardai after an alleged assault by the TD on Mr. McDermott.
McDermott filed an assault complaint with Gardai following an incident during a visit by Taoiseach Enda Kenny to Roscommon.
Mr McDermott told the Irish Mirror: “He elbowed me four or five times and I got a dig in the back from a Fine Gael minder.
“All I wanted to do was talk to the Taoiseach about promises he made with regards to Roscommon Hospital and I know the Taoiseach would have been happy to talk to me.
“There was no need for Deputy Feighan to do what he did.”
Deputy Feighan released a statement saying he ‘overreacted ina tense situation’.
“I formed the opinion that the Taoiseach was going to be confronted in an aggressive and physical manner.
“In hindsight, I misread the situation and overreacted in a tense situation.
“As a Fine Gael TD and a member of the Government, I know that the public expects the highest standards.
“I regret if any actions of mine caused hurt to anybody especially the Hospital Action Committee candidate and former Roscommon senior county goalkeeper, John McDermott,” the statement said.
