Supermarket chain Aldi is to launch a recruitment drive in a bid to ensure they’re sufficiently staffed during the coronavirus crisis.

The retailer already employs around 4,000 people here - but now say they want to ensure they can maintain the current level of service during a “very challenging time ahead”.

Details of the drive will be announced in the coming days.

The company says they want to hear from people in the retail, catering and hospitality sectors who may have lost their jobs in recent days.

Aldi’s John Curtin said: “We are very conscious of being able to provide opportunities to some of the very many people who have lost their livelihoods, hopefully temporarily, through no fault of their own”.

Aldi is also now joining the likes of Lidl, Tesco and Dunnes Stores in introducing priority shopping hours for elderly and vulnerable customers during the COVID-19 crisis.

The two hours between 11am and 1pm each day are being designated for those customers in all Aldi stores across the country.

The firm will also be introducing new social distancing measures at all their stores, as well as installing clear screens at every till to protect staff and customers.

Meanwhile, the retailer is also changing its opening hours to 9am- 8pm, Monday to Sunday.

Mr Curtin said: “This is slightly shorter than usual to help support our colleagues, who have been working tirelessly, and to ensure our stores are at their best every day,

“These new specialised shopping hours, social distancing measures and opening hours will further reinforce the welfare of everyone.”
