The Abbey Theatre in Dublin has purchased a building adjacent to its existing theatre to allow for its redevelopment.
The building at 15 to 17 Eden Quay faces the River Liffey.
The Director of the Abbey Fiach Mac Conghail says they purchased the site so that they can develop at some point in the future a new building for the Abbey on their own site.
He said purchasing the site now is a common sense solution to securing its future.
“This is a proud day for the Abbey Theatre and a testament to the vision of our board and my management team” Mr. Mac Conghail said.
“Taking this opportunity to purchase this site now is a common sense solution to securing the future of the Abbey Theatre” he added.
The current building was built in 1966 with a theatre having existed on the site since 1834.
Recently the Abbey Theatre temporarily relocated to the O’Reilly Theatre at Belvedere in Dublin for a 9 week period from July 26th while works were carried out to remove asbestos discovered in the Abbey Theatre auditorium.
Funding for these works was provided from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
The theatre says this work is now complete.
