A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with falsely imprisoning Tánaiste Joan Burton and one of her advisers during a water charge protest in Dublin.

Joan Burton and Karen O'Connell were allegedly trapped inside their car for hours as they tried to leave a graduation ceremony last November.

The boy facing two counts of false imprisonment was just 15 when he allegedly tried to stop the movement of Mr Burton's car as it made its way to a local church in Jobstown following a graduation on November 15th last.

His case was adjourned until December.

Six others also appeared before the Children's Court today.

The youngest, who is only 14, was joined by his mother and sister. He is accused of throwing missiles at gardaí.

A 16-year-old pleaded guilty to damaging the windscreen of a garda car and using threatening language. He will be sentenced next month.

Three others - aged between 16 and 17 - are charged with violent disorder; while the eldest, who is 18, is charged with violent disorder and criminal damage.

All of their cases will be back before the court before the end of the year.

Court reporter Tom Tuite told Newstalk Lunchtime the case has several aspects to it.
