More than half a century after the Robinson family were thrown off course by a stowaway on their route to a space colony, Lost in Space is set to return to the small screen on Netflix. The streaming giant has ordered a new 10-episode run of the campy sci-fi classic, set to launch on the global service in 2018.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series of the show “takes its cues from the original series and centres on the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their personal demons.”

Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president of original programming, added: “The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”

The production team hoping to get the show off the ground includes showrunner Zack Estrin (Prison Break), and writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless – the scribes behind the flops Gods of Egypt and Last Witch Hunter, and currently writing the new franchise-launching Power Rangers movie.

Billed as a “survival story for the ages,” Lost in Space should reach screens in 2018.
