Diageo has announced that it is ceasing operations at its Waterford Brewery by the end of the year with the loss of 36 jobs. Following a review it has been decided that all of the Waterford operations will be transferred to one site at St. James's Gate in Dublin.

The move is being made to ensure the long-term sustainability and global competitiveness of its brewing operations in Ireland. Diageo says it is committed to supporting employees in exploring alternative employment. It adds that this follows a review of its brewing operations.

The company will now engage in formal consultation with the relevant representatives on the implementation of the plan.

'No reflection on staff'

Paul Armstrong is Supply Chain Director at Diageo Europe Beer Supply.

"Through their skill and commitment our employees at Waterford have made an outstanding contribution to our business over many years and it is with sadness and regret that we are required to make this decision in order to maintain our global competitiveness" he said.

"We are committed to supporting these employees in exploring alternative employment through career management expertise, career counselling and outplacement support" he added.

He told WLR that the decision to pull out of Waterford by no means reflects the efforts of the staff.
