175 convicted sex offenders are being supervised in the community after being released from prison.

New figures have been released by the Probation Service to Newstalk under the Freedom of Information Act.

They show that 175 convicted sex offenders have been released from prison but are still being supervised in the community.

They range from young adults to pensioners - 61 are under 35, and 16 are aged between 66 and 85.

The highest amount of offenders - 42 - are managed by probation services in the Midlands and Southeast region, followed by 30 in Dublin South and Wicklow and 17 in Dublin North and Northeast.

The Probation Service notes that the numbers refer to the 'region that is managing the offender and not the location of the offender'.

Currently, people are not allowed to know if a convicted sex offender is living close to you - but rape survivor Debbie Cole says people should in some cases, like in the UK.

She said: "I do think we should have a system like Sarah's Law.

"[If my children] were going to an art club, dance club or football, I could go the guards and say 'Joe Bloggs is running this art club - are they safe to be around my children?'"

The Probation Service works with a number of organisations to manage the risk posed by sex offenders.

These include community-based therapeutic programmes.

High-risk offenders are monitored more closely to ensure children are kept safe.

Dublin Rape Crisis Centre CEO Noeline Blackwell told The Hard Shoulder says some convicted offenders would require more supervision than others after release.

She said: "It is not a surprise that there are 175 who are out, post-release, and with supervision orders.

"Some people will not have a supervision order imposed after their release - they'll serve their sentence, and that will be the end of it.

"The judge will always have the capacity to say 'I just want to be satisfied that this person's behaviour has changed', and so they impose a supervision period.

"That's a very important power that the court has, and it is a safety precaution for our society."
