An investigation is underway in Co. Down after a boy died in a farming accident. 10-year-old Aaron Macaulay fell from farm machinery in Castlewellan yesterday.

He was airlifted to hospital but could not be saved. It is thought his brother may also have been injured.

Investigators from the Northern Ireland Health and Safety Executive (HSENI) are examining the circumstances of the incident.

It is the latest of a series of tragedies to hit the agricultural community in Northern Ireland. Last week, a father-of-three died after falling from a wall on his farm in Derry.

70-year-old Henry Allen is believed to have lost his balance while working with silage.

Earlier last week 6-year-old boy Harry Starrett died after collapsing in the milking parlour of his family farm on the outskirts of Armagh.

There were fears he had died in a farm-related accident, but a post mortem subsequently identified an undiagnosed heart condition.

Last year 12 people died in farm accidents in Northern Ireland. Harry Sinclair from the Ulster Farmers Union says farms are dangerous places.
