Today marked the final leg of Newstalk's 100 Days of Walking challenge, and people across the country came out in their droves to celebrate the occasion.

The initiative, supported by the Applegreen rewards app, was launched on January 1st this year by Newstalk Breakfast presenter Dr Ciara Kelly.

She called on listeners to take up the challenge of walking for just thirty minutes a day for 100 days.

Hundreds of people nationwide braved hail, rain and shine on a daily basis within their locality during the fourth year of the initiative.ย

Dr Kelly told Down to Business with Bobby Kerr earlier that 100 Days of Walking had been "peculiar" this year given the pandemic.

"I've done it for a few years now and the thing was in other years, sometimes it would actually be quite hard to fit it in because you had other stuff going on," she said.

"Whereas this year, because we had so little going on and because walking became such a focus in many people's lives, the walk for many of us became the highlight of our day.

"It kind of started to represent something very different this year and I know from all the messages I get about it that for a lot of people it has kind of been something that kept them going this year in a year like no other.

"It has been a long 100 days but also it has flown by."

She was joined by fellow Newstalk presenters Shane Coleman and Kieran Cuddihy as they put on their walking shoes for the final day of the challenge this morning.

Speaking after completing the last walk, Dr Kelly said she felt emotional that the 100 days had come to an end.

She thanked everyone for taking part and for crossing the finishing line with her today.

Dr Kelly said it had been fantastic and that she is looking forward to taking part again next year.

Participants in the 100 Days of Walking challenge shared pictures and videos from their outings today.
