Be My Eyes

Be My Eyes is an iPhone app that connects blind people with volunteer helpers from around the world via live video chat. Those who download can start helping blind people see what they point their phone at by describing it to them.

The iPhone has a great feature called VoiceOver which enables people who are completely blind to use an iPhone with synthetic speech and touch-based interface. This is what Be My Eyes uses.

With the By My Eyes App, a blind person requests assistance. The challenge that he/she needs help with can be anything from knowing the expiry date on the milk to navigating new surroundings.

The volunteer helper receives a notification for help and a live video connection is established. From the live video the volunteer can help the blind person by answering the question they need answered.

By the end of each session there’s an opportunity to rate or report misuse, both for the helper and the user. People who misuse the system will be excluded from the network. An Android version is underway.

Give A Man A Seat

In Cork, two men, Wayne Mullins and Paul Sheehan have come together to form and create Give a man a seat. As they say themselves:

We realise its tough after a few shops to stay focused as your better half shops until she drops. We are dedicated to finding you comfort and solace while you wait for herself to find that perfect outfit. We are here for you lads.

This app aims to help those who hate shopping with their partners.

The idea is simple: The app tells you what shops have seats that you can sit and relax while your partner tries all the clothes on sale.

The site also rates the shops that are submitted with a little description. Only the good shops seem to make it. Dublin is next on the list to expand the app to.

Facebook and Google options for what happens to your pages when you die

Facebook users will soon be able to nominate family members or friends to take control of their account if they pass away. It’s live in the US now and Facebook promise it will expand to other countries soon.

Facebook have introduced a a new feature that lets people choose a legacy contact—a family member or friend who can manage their account when they pass away. Once someone lets them know that a person has passed away, Facebook will memorialize the account and the legacy contact will be able to:

  • Write a post to display at the top of the memorialized Timeline (for example, to announce a memorial service or share a special message)
  • Respond to new friend requests from family members and friends who were not yet connected on Facebook
  • Update the profile picture and cover photo

So basically it becomes a digital tombstone for you almost.

Google works similarly with Google Inactive Account Manager. You can choose from the following:

Timeout period - Users set a timeout period, after which your account can be treated as inactive. The timeout period starts with your last sign-in to your Google account.

Alerts - Inactive Account Manager will alert you via text message and optionally email before the timeout period ends.

Notify contacts and share data - You can add trusted contacts who should be made aware that you are no longer using your account. You can also share data with them if you like.
