Peter Cousins and his girl Dawn were on a once in a life time round-the-world road trip and found themselves in the beautiful and secluded setting in the Nevada desert. Natural romantic urges took over and away they went!
But for Peter, 55, it all went very wrong.
Peter says: “When I got out of the water there were pains in my left arm and I just collapsed.
“We were in the middle of nowhere three hours from the nearest town. We were miles from the ranch and even there you couldn’t get a phone signal. I didn’t know if I was going to make it.”
It was down to Dawn to run 3 miles to the nearest road and flag down a car. They called for an air ambulance and Peter was taking to Reno hospital for vital treatment.
Unfortunately for him he almost had another heart attack when he got a bill for $250,000.
He says: “When I woke up after my heart attack I was in A&E. Doctors fitted a stent and gave me lots of drugs to keep me alive.
“I was in there five days. As I was leaving the doctors asked me how I planned to pay the bill. I thought it would be about $5,000. I was gobsmacked when I saw it. Stupidly, I didn’t have travel insurance.”
