Eco Pinot Noir 2014, Casablanca, Chile, €11.95 (reduced from €13.95)
Wine made from Burgundy’s Pinot Noir grape is a great versatile choice for Christmas, either for the big meal or as a party wine. It’s got plenty of fruit but is low on tannin and it’s never heavy, so it’s good on its own as social lubricant and matches well with salmon, chicken, pork, duck and of course turkey.
Good Burgundy can be shockingly expensive but thankfully other places in the world are starting to make affordable examples. Chile has several and Eco Pinot Noir is made from organic grapes by legendary Chilean winemaker Alvaro Espinoza. There are probably tens of thousands of winemakers in the world but this year but in June 2015 Decanter magazine rated him as one of the world’s 30 most prestigious winemakers. He knows his stuff!
The wine is from the cooler climate region of Casablanca and 20% of it is aged in French oak. The result is moderately ripe cherry fruit with freshness and a little spice and at this price great value as the most basic Burgundy starts at about €15.
