On this afternoon’s Moncrieff Show, Seán will be learning what makes for a very long engagement and discussing habit-forming products.

When your alarm rings first thing in the morning, aside from opening up the Newstalk app, how long before you’re attempting to crush brightly pixelated candy squares or liking a Facebook post? How many Tweets have you sent before even getting out of bed, or whose filtered life are you coveting on Instagram while sitting on the toilet?

Why is it that some pieces of technology completely capture the public’s imagination and attention, while others are only a flash in the pan? Or worse still, flop entirely? Is there some sort of method to luring the public in, hook, line and sinker?

To answer that, Seán will be talking to Nir Eyal, a former video-game and advertising industry insider, and an expert on consumer psychology. His book Hooked: How to build habit-forming products examines the four steps that encourage customers to keep coming back for more.

Of course, why just learn about the psychology of habit-forming products, when you can wastefully spend more of your time than is really necessary experiencing them? Here are 10 of the most addictive apps you won’t be able to keep away from in 2015...
