How do we evaluate the voices in our heads? Professor Charles Fernyhough, from Durham University, joined Sean Moncrieff on Wednesday to discuss his new book The Voices Within.
He explained how hearing voices is often associated with mental ill health, but not necessarily so. Often the experience of hearing voices can be positive. An example of this is writers who can hear their characters in their minds.
However, he also stressed that there is a lot of stigma surrounding voice hearing. He feels that it is important to highlight that between 5-10% of the population experience this phenomenon and that it can be disturbing due to the lack of information and discussion on the subject.
