The Government says traffic volumes have not seen an increase since coronavirus travel restrictions were introduced.

It had been reported this week that people noticed more traffic on the roads.

However Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) said there has been no noticeable increase in traffic volumes.

TII operates a network of traffic counters on national roads across the country.

After the announcement of the travel restrictions on March 27th, there was a reduction in traffic across the national road network of 65% to 70% - compared to the same dates in 2019.

At weekends that reduction was greater again at about 87%.

Earlier this week TII undertook an analysis of traffic figures, and found the volumes in line with previous weeks since the restrictions were introduced.

Assistant Secretary-General at the Department of the Taoiseach is Liz Canavan.

She said: "Spot checks on roads show no noticeable increase, most are within 5% of average weekday volumes under the current restrictions.

"But it is something we are continuing to monitor along with An Garda Síochána reports."

She added: "This news is highly encouraging as it re-enforces the fact that the vast majority of people are continuing to observe the essential public health advice for which we are grateful and of course, we need to keep it going.

"As I have said many times before in recent weeks, we are all in this together."
