YouTube will launch a new app called YouTube Kids - it will run on smartphones and tablets and feature episodes of popular children's TV shows like Thomas the Tank Engine and Sesame Street. The app will pull all of the streaming site's kid-safe channels into one location.
It will be free of charge, and feature a specifically designed easy-to-use interface for children.
The app will be Andriod-only - the company has offered no indication that it is planning to launch an iOS version.
Parents will also be able to set limits on the amount of time that children can spend on the app. After time runs out the app will stop streaming and a password will be required to continue watching.
Shimrit Ben-Yair, a YouTube product manager for children said: "Parents were constantly asking us, can you make YouTube a better place for our kids."
He adds: "We've seen 50% growth year over year in viewing time on YouTube, but for our family entertainment channels, it's more like 200%."
The app will be formally launched on Monday at Kidscreen Summit, a conference for the children’s entertainment industry.
