It is estimated that the drone sector is worth €50bn worldwide.

However in recent months a number of near misses with planes have left many people questioning the safety of the unmanned aircraft.

One of the founders of the taxi app Hailo, Jay Bregman, does not agree and has explained how he wants to turn Ireland into the epicenter of the the drone industry.

Jay, who left Hailo last year and has now founded a company called Verifly, joined Ivan on Newstalk Breakfast today to discuss the subject of drones.

"The reason why I left was because I was so interested in what was next," Jay said. "To me what was next was the third dimension - things that could fly.

"I had been introduced to drones around a year ago by a company that makes them in California. Once I saw them I knew these things were going to be the next internet," he added.

As well as being able to "take pictures of you from perspectives you've never seen before," Jay says "what they can also do is deliver things from A to B more efficiently than any kind of technology we've ever seen before".

"You really have to look at drones... as a platform for doing virtually anything you can do you can do that moves stuff around and takes pictures," he added.

In terms of problems, Jay says the growing popularity of drones "is not something that the traditional aviation authorities are able to do effectively or enforce very effective... they're used to dealing with maybe 10,000 airports, but not a million where everybody has something that can take off and land on their property". His new company Verifly is looking to deal with some of the regulatory issues that will arise as drones grow more and more popular.

You can listen back to the interview below. He started by saying he's still invested in Hailo's success:
