The Multi-channel Multi-point Distribution System (MMDS) was turned off yesterday, impacting just under 10,000 homes in Ireland.
MMDS was a broadcast TV platform which Virgin Media acquired by when it was UPC in 2005, following its purchase of Chorus and NTL. This provided TV to customers outside of the cable network.
This service was offered on a particular spectrum band under a licence granted by ComReg. As of April 18th, that license has expired meaning customers will no longer have access to MMDS TV.
What now?
Virgin Media say they began contacting customers in January of this year to inform them of the end of MMDS. Now that the service is gone, customers will need to source a new TV provider, if they have not done so already.
