Today’s high-end smartphones are packed with functionality, with messaging and video calls, games and health and fitness trackers, dating and banking apps, all of which are constantly scrambling for our attention. Then when we finally reach our point of mental saturation we download apps to helps us streamline and simplify our overloaded devices.
Cue the lights for the Light Phone. A slim device, roughly the size of a credit card, with just one function: phone calls. Numbers glow on its sleek, smooth touchscreen surface, giving you what you need to connect, nothing more. (Okay, it tells the time too—but that’s it.)
It took a meagre eight days for the device to become fully funded on crowdsource fund site, Kickstarter. The phone comes pre-set with minutes and a unique number, so once you set up call forwarding with your normal phone, you can take this one on the road with you and leave behind your information heavy smartphone at home. No more texts, no more notifications.
The phone is expected to come to market sometime next year with an estimated price of €100.
