Social media website Twitter is to add 100 new jobs to its Dublin workforce. This will double the size of its Irish operations to more than 200 people by the end of 2014.

The positions will be across multiple roles, including sales, HR, finance, marketing, engineering and user services.

Commenting on the hiring plans, Twitter's Managing Director in Ireland, Stephen McIntyre said "We are already recruiting for over 30 roles including legal, HR, sales, marketing and engineering positions."

"Our users tell us that Twitter brings them closer to their interests and passions. We're also delighted to be working with thousands of businesses to help them find their voice online and connect with their customers in an engaging and entertaining way" he added.

Twitter has more than 200 million active users worldwide, with more than 500 million tweets are sent each day.

It says 70% of Twitter usage is outside the US, while 60% of users access the platform on a mobile device. It also recently announced plans to sell shares in the company to the public.

The Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton welcomed the announcement.

"Today’s announcement that they have created 100 jobs already and will create a further 100 in the next 15 months is a huge boost for the country".

"Not only are the jobs themselves hugely welcome - but the strength of the Twitter name is a huge advantage for me and the IDA when we go into boardrooms across the world pitching for new investments" he added.

Minister Bruton has met senior Twitter executives at their California headquarters in recent years to discuss expansion plans to Ireland. This project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland.
