Trips to Ireland increase by over 17%

The number of overseas visitors to Ireland increased by 17.1% between December 2015 and last month.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures show that almost 1.7 million people visited Ireland between the end of last year and February 2016.

That is an overall increase of 247,000 compared to the same period last year.

There was a 21.2% increase in the number of people coming from Great Britain, with almost 850,000 people visiting Ireland from the UK.

There was also a 14.4% rise in people coming from other European countries, and a 13% increase in visitors from North America.

The total number of trips abroad made by Irish residents increased by 7.7% - with over 1.3 million people making oversea trips.

Tourism Ireland's Head of Strategy Peter Nash says the outlook is good:
