Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the company’s legal conflict with the FBI today at a product launch event in California. The company is set to unveil a new iPhone and tablet at the event, but Cook spoke about the legal battle before beginning the product announcements.

Speaking to Apple customers Cook said:

“We build the iPhone for you, our customers, and we know that it is a deeply personal device. For many of us, the iPhone is an extension of ourselves. We need to decide as a nation how much power the Government should have over our data and over our privacy. We did not expect to be in this position at odds with our own government but we believe strongly that we have a responsibility to help you protect your data and to help you protect your privacy. We will not shrink from this responsibility.”
