What are you spending on your Christmas presents this year?

The 2012 Christmas Spending Survey from Deloitte finds that Irish consumers predict on average they will spend 1.7% less this Christmas.

The average spend per household in Ireland is set to be €965.80, with an average of €499.60 spent on gifts, €288.30 spent on food and drink and €177.90 spent on socialising.

The report says price is the decisive factor for the majority of Europeans - with 44% of Irish consumers buying more products that are on sale.

Most popular gifts

Over half of Irish consumers use both websites and stores for comparing and searching for products and value for money, it says.

The most popular gifts for Irish consumers are books, money and clothes and shoes.

Over half of all Christmas spending in Ireland is dedicated to children, with 6 gifts being the average per child and education toys being the most popular.

The study also shows that Irish consumers are less pessimistic in terms of the overall state of the economy.

While business owners and retailers say that festive shopping is in full swing and is also picking up as Christmas gets closer.
