The Taoiseach has urged European Union Finance Ministers to do a deal to extend the terms of Irish EU banking loans.

In an interview with CNBC, Enda Kenny said the level of debt imposed on the Irish people was unfair and he urged EU leaders to keep the promise they made last June to do a bank debt deal.

Speaking last month he said that new systems available to other countries should now be applied to Ireland.

"The mechanisms and the tools available now were not available when Ireland went over the edge - and in that sense, we feel that the imposition on Ireland has been unfair and that the mechanism that are available now should be applied in Ireland's particular case" he said.

EU backing for extension

The EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner has also previosuly said he backs the idea of granting an extension to Irish bailout loans.

Speaking in Brussels last month, Olli Rehn said it was favourable because it will facilitate a successful return to market financing for Ireland which is in the profound interest of the whole European Union.

He also said he backs similar proposals for Portugal.

"We are in principle favourable to this objective because it will facilitate a successful return to market financing for Ireland and Portugal, which is in the profound interest of both of these countries as well as of the whole European Union" he said.

EU Finance Ministers meet on Monday where it is hoped progress may be made on the issue.

Enda Kenny said an agreement would help the Irish recovery.
