The High Court has extended protection to the Sunday Business Post for one final day to allow crunch talks on a rescue package continue.

Examiner Michael McAteer is meeting with 7 creditors who are owed €2.5-millio, in order to secure their support for a deal, that will most likely see them accepting losses.

Today, Day 99 – is the day court protection for The Sunday Business was supposed to end.

But the High Court has agreed to give examiner Michael McAteer until tomorrow to try and finalise a rescue package for the newspaper.

After that the court has no power to continue the examinership process or, as Mr Justice Peter Kelly said, ‘we’re on the brink’.

The plan to save the Business Post involves selling the newspaper for €2.75-million to investors led by media executive Paul Cooke.

The examiner is in talks with creditors of the newspaper today to try and get their backing for the deal.

His barrister Rossa Fanning apologised to the court that the terms of the deal have been extensively leaked to the media, though he acknowledged it was somewhat inevitable once staff had been informed.
