Hollyhill residents have come out against Apple's plans to expand its European headquarters in Cork.

The US tech giant wants to construct a four-storey extension to its HQ and add a 750-space car park.

Chief among the community's concerns are increased traffic, the negative impact on views in the area, disruption caused by construction and also potential health issues.

Some 30 residents of Ardcullen, Hollyhill, have signed a petition to Cork City Council.

The petition reads:

"We object on the grounds that we are practically living on an industrial estate. Our homes are closer to the existing extension than the staff car park is to it.

"When we were housed on this estate we were facing a green space for over 20 years. Now we open our curtains and front doors to an office block.

"The last extension, which is still not completed, took its toll on us and our families and had health impacts for some of the residents".

Both Fianna Fáil City Councillor Tony Fitzgerald and Sinn Féin Councillor Mick Nugent have also written to the council objecting the plans.

Nugent, who lives in area, has said:

"There is going to be 1,000 new employees, that’s fair enough, but when there is a fairly good bus service that could be extended, do you really need those car spaces?"
