Planning permission being sought for €50m construction plan in Cork

Planning permission is being sought for a major construction plan in Cork city centre worth around €50m.

The plans to redevelop the derelict site of the former Capital Cinema on the city's Grand Parade will create 450 jobs - 300 of those in the construction phase.

It will link the famous English Market to St Patrick's Street with a food innovation centre, along with retail and office units.

It is being developed by John Cleary Development, who acquired the land last year.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, reporter with the Irish Independent Ralph Riegel says the planning permission could meet with some opposition but the majority of people appear to be in favour of developing the site.

He said the landbank around the Grand Parade was assembled around 10 years ago by another developer, and had been earmarked for a €200m development before the financial collapse.
