Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan will not name the new governor of Ireland's Central Bank until after next Tuesday's Budget.
Robert Watt, secretary general of the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, and Philip R. Lane professor of political economy at Trinity College Dublin are believed to be the two candidates who are still in contention.
There had been speculation that the Minister would name Patrick Honohan's successor during this week's Cabinet meeting - but the recruiting process will not be completed until next week, or the week after.
It addition to running the Irish Central Bank, the successful candidate will also sit on the controlling council of the European Central Bank.

Irish travel company Hostelwold - the world's biggest hostel booking website - is reported to be considering a stock market flotation.
The Times (London) reports that it has appointed Numis to consider a dual listing in London and Dublin.
The company recently moved into larger offices in Dublin, last year it reported revenues of €80m and profits of €25m.

Anheuser-Busch InBev NV attempts to acquire SABMiller look in doubt ahead of next Wednesday's deadline (October 14th).
AB InBev has said that SABMiller’s claims that AB InBev's offer undervalues the company "lack credibility."
The deal has the backing of some key-shareholders, and AB InBev has called on them to, "voice their views and should not allow the board of SABMiller to frustrate this process and let this opportunity slip away."
SABMiller says that as well as undervaluing the company, the merger proposals are also "highly conditional" and that it contains several regulatory and structural uncertainties.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director, Christine Lagarde has registered her interest in serving a second five year term.
She says that she is "prepared to serve" if the fund's shareholders want her to stay on. Her current term ends in July 2016, until this point she had evaded questions about her future.
"I’m certainly open to the fact that it could not be my last annual meeting," she said.
Adding: "I have served; done my best. I’m prepared to serve, but it’s not my call."
