Opening Bell: Google, Amazon and Microsoft all report earnings and Stripe takes home EY's big prize

Google's new parent company, Alphabet has reported a 50% increase in profits during its third quarter.

Net income increased to $3,98bn, up from $2.74 in the same quarter last year - while its revenues grew to $3.98bn.

The growth was mainly attributed to an increase in online searches and more users logging on to YouTube.

Microsoft has reported better-than-expected revenues for the ninth quarter in a row - its performance was boosted by an increase in demand for its cloud services.

As the PC market has continued to weaken the company's Chief Executive, Satya Nadella has been restructuring the company to focus on cloud services.

At one point the company's shares rose by as much as 9.8% to $52.75 in after-hours trading, their highest level since 2000.

Amazon recorded a surprise profit for the second quarter in a row as North American sales were higher than expected and the company continued to expand into the cloud computing market. 

Since coming to prominence, Amazon has sacrificed profitability by investing in a wide range of projects, from a botched attempt at becoming a player in the smartphone market, to its own video streaming service to compete with Netflix.

Net sales from Amazon Web Services rose by more than 78% during the three month period, growing to $2.09bn.

Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said in a conference call that the balance between investing and cost controls "will be lumpy over time."

Two Limerick brothers whose online payments company is now worth €5bn have been crowned IrelandÂ’'s EY Entrepreneurs of the Year. 

John and Patrick Collison - aged 23 and 25 respectively - were the big winners for the Silicon Valley-based Stripe at the gala awards ceremony in Dublin this evening. 

They were among three cross-category winners - with Donald Fitzmaurice and Padraig McBridge taking the prize for Emerging business and Tyrone man Jack Dobson winning the Industry category for food-giant Dunbia.

Ireland's retail sector is showing signs of a bounce-back, after posting its best performance since before the recession in the third quarter of this year.

Retail Excellence Ireland says sales in the three months to the end of September across 4,000 stores in Ireland topped €3.3 billion.

That figure is 5.5% up on the same period last year and the best quarterly performance since early 2007.

The hot beverage sector of the market saw the biggest increase, up almost 14%.
