Convenience store chain Mace is to create 1,200 new jobs with the expansion of its network over the next 4 years. It intends to open 100 new stores nationwide as part of new strategy that will grow the business by 20%.

The chain says its shops have outperformed the market to become the fastest-growing brand in Irish convenience retailing. The expansion was revealed at the Mace Convention in Co. Wicklow which was attended by over 200 retailers.

Willie O'Byrne is Managing Director of Mace operators BWG Foods "In 2012 we bucked the industry trend by opening 28 new stores, and our new retail strategy is designed to harness that momentum, leading to the creation of more than of 1,200 new jobs in towns and villages right across the country" he said.

'Working with partners & suppliers'

"Our partnership with Maxol, renewed last year, has seen the Mace group establish itself as Ireland’s largest forecourt symbol brand and our next phase of growth will focus on working with both partners and suppliers to firmly cement Mace in a leadership position in Irish retailing" he added.

The new plan will also see additional investment in Mace own-brand with the company predicting a 20% increase in the range of own-brand products available in stores this year.

Mace opened its first store in 1960 and currently has 240 shops across the country.
