There has been another slight decrease in the numbers on the Live Register.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) says there were almost 431,000 people signing on last month which is a fall of 1,400.

The drop represents the 6th successive month of declines.

However the rate of unemployment in December remained unchanged at 14.6%.

The overall rate for last year rose to 14.8% compared to a level of 14.6% for 2011.

Number of long-term unemployed grows

In unadjusted terms there were 423,733 people signing on the Live Register in December last year.

The CSO says the trend in the overall Live Register continues to be "one of movement within a small range, annual decreases were recorded in all months of 2012".

On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register also showed a monthly decrease of 1,800 males in December while females increased by 400 over the same period.

The number of long-term claimants on in December 2012 stood at 187,144.

The number of male long-term claimants increased by 1,089 - or 0.8% - in the year while the increase for women was 5,257 - or 10.6%.

This translates to an overall annual increase of 6,346 (3.5%) in the number of long-term unemployed.

In December 55.8% - or 236,589 of all those on the Live Register were short-term.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny says generating employment is a key element to the Irish Presidency of the EU.
