Jurassic World has smashed box office records, becoming the first film to gross over $500m in its opening weekend - with total earnings of $511.8m (almost €456m).

Quartz has compiled a list of the other top earners - while Jurassic World resurrects an old franchise, it is the only film apart from The Avengers on this list which isn't a direct sequel.

Key actors including Chris Pratt are already signed up for a sequel, but given the overall earning potential of the franchise you can probably expect there to be more than one.

Taking $204,600,000 (€182,259,537) in the US made it the second most successful opening there, after The Avengers.

The film's earnings were boosted by massive sales in China where it made an incredible $100m.

Jurassic World's critical reception has been mixed, it currently has a 70 percent aggregated rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Last Friday Esther McCarthy gave it a solid, but not earth shattering three stars on Moncrieff's Movies and Booze.
