Irish Rail has been ordered to drop a TV advert, offering inter-city journeys for €9.99. The ad featured an announcer giving out information over a tannoy system in relation to train departure times - referring to all trains as being '9.99'.

The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland (ASAI) says it is impossible for customers booking online to get tickets for under €10.

The ruling comes after one customer complained that their €9.99 fare actually cost nearly €13, when credit card and booking fees were included.

The complaint says the fare was subject to a €2 transaction fee and a €1 credit card fee.

In response, the advertisers said that the fares advertised were only available on the Irish Rail website, and that once a customer went online the opening paragraph of the landing page "clearly stated that Terms and Conditions Apply"

The advertisers also said that once the complaint was brought to their attention they understood how their advertising may have been seen to be misleading.

The ASAI has ordered Irish Rail not to run the ad again.

Irish Rail says as a result of the complaint, the commercial has been edited for the final week of the campaign - to include the line 'terms and conditions apply'.
