Speaking at Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit yesterday, Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom revealed that the app had considered launching a second r-rated version of the photo-sharing social network, as a way to handle the issue of censoring nude images on social media.

The #FreetheNipple social media campaign has sought to draw attention to, what it believed to be, the over-censoring of female bodies on various social media platforms.

When asked if he even considered offering a second uncensored site Mr Systrom replied that "there have been discussions" about creating an alternative product, adding that even if create one there would still be a issue around "who decides what's R-rated."

"We’re not in the business of hosting porn," he hastened to add, "we focus on people being able to express themselves in beautiful ways."

He also said that the company does not have a defined policy on nudity, and that content is only removed if it has been reported as being offensive by users.

Girls creator, star, and writer Lena Dunham also took part in the panel. She has been a vocal critic of social media trolls - particularly on Twitter.

She has quit Twitter, but kept her Instagram account - saying that she feels that Instagram offers a more positive environment.

Mr Systrom said that the company is conscious of the need to monitor user behaviour on Instagram, saying, “We get rid of people on our platform who were causing trouble. We tried to set a tone that Instagram wasn’t a place for that and we invest heavily in that."
