As the Greek crisis counts down to next Friday’s next loan repayment to the International Monetary Fund, there is confusion this morning about the nature of a warning IMF Head Christine Lagarde may have issued yesterday about what could happen in the days and weeks ahead.
An interview she gave to the respected German newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, in which she is quoted as saying that a Greek exit from the Eurozone was possible but that it would probably "not be an end to the euro" has made headlines in the financial press worldwide and significantly upped the pressure on the Greek negotiations.
But in his report about the interview, Derek Scally, the Irish Times correspondent in Germany, notes that the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung or FAZ, later withdrew the key quotes attributed to Ms Lagarde.
While in attendance at the G7 summit, Lagarde also warned EU members no to "play games" with Greece, echoing comments by US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, who said that further brinksmanship could leave Europe once accident away from disaster.
