Swedish furniture giant IKEA wants to build a second store in Dublin. The flat-pack furniture company has identified a site in south Dublin.

IKEA already has stores in Ballymun and Belfast and it is now looking to have a ban on large-scale stores overturned to facilitate a 3rd Irish outlet in Cherrywood. The firm told a planning hearing yesterday that it should be allowed to build a retail warehouse in the area.

If the plan gets the go ahead it will create 400 jobs.

Dun Laoighaire-Rathdown County Council has drawn up a plan for the south Dublin site which could see up to 8,300 homes, a town centre and 6 schools being built there.

IKEA claims that it is restricted from building here because of current planning laws. In a submission the company says the Cherrywood proposals deny it the opportunity to make any planning arrangement to build a store.

The Irish Independent says IKEA first met with the Council back in 2010 but that a study due to be conducted on the propsals has not yet happened.
