Last week we told you about the new "read receipts" feature on Twitter. This means the sender will know when the recipient has read a DM. While some people love the addition of this feature, others don't like it at all. The small tick has become a staple of WhatsApp, Facebook and iMessage.

If you're not a fan, you can turn the receipt off on all of those platforms, without too much hassle.

Twitter has set the DM read receipts by default, but it's very simple to turn them off. Go to "Security and privacy” page in your settings, scrolling down to Direct Messages and unticking the “Send/Receive Read Receipts” option.

WhatsApp

Many of us first became accustomed to the concept of "read receipts" on WhatsApp. The tick system can be the source of much anxiety to many, but you can take control of it.

Head over to the "Privacy" section of the settings, found using the tabs at the bottom of the screen, and switch the “Read Receipts” setting to off.

It's worth noting, however, that if you turn off read receipts, you won't be able to see anyone else's either.

Facebook Messenger

While there isn't an official way to turning off the receipts on Messenger, it is possible to read a message without the sender knowing. The easiest way to do this is by switching your phone into flight mode, then opening the message. Make sure to exit the app before turning flight mode off.

iMessage

Apple’s messaging system makes it incredibly easy for the user to take control of their read receipts. It asks the user if they want to turn them on. If the user then changes their mind, simply toggle the slider within the Messages part of settings.
