After months of rumours, Google has finally announced details of the latest additions to both Android software and hardware.

As announced several months ago, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system Android will go by the unusual name of KitKat. The upgrade - Android 4.4 - is largely focused on 'under the hood' upgrades to increase the operating system's speed and power, particularly on lower-spec phones. In terms of new features, it will offer improved integration of Google's search tools, and a revised Google Hangouts application will organise SMS, multimedia messages and voice calls together in one app. It will also offer more robust voice tools, with "OK, Google" used as the main command for hands-free phone use.

Other features include improved printing and sharing tools, alongside aesthetic improvements. Different mobile operators and manufacturers will make the upgrade available over the coming weeks and months. However, not all Android phones will be compatible, including Google's original Nexus model (manufactured by Samsung).

Google also announced the launch of their latest flagship smartphone, the Nexus 5. Manufactured by LG, it will be the first phone with KitKat installed. It boasts a 4.95” full HD screen, improved camera (including image stabilisation tools) and a slim design. The tech giant is calling it "the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made".

As ever with Nexus phones, one of its biggest selling points will be its price compared to other smartphones - it will retail from only $349 (€258). Unfortunately, as has become typical for Nexus releases, the phone will not be available in Ireland, at least initially. Any Irish customers looking for one will need to import it from the UK or one of the other initial markets (U.S., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, Korea and India).
