With a strong presence in Dublin and a data centre in Meath on the way, Facebook's Irish love affair continues with reports that it is considering opening a new office in the People's Republic.

Mark Zuckerberg's social media behemoth is in talks to become the first tenant of the taking the top floor of a new €50m property in Cork's city centre, according to the Irish Examiner.

The building, which will stand where the old Capitol cinema was once located, is a John Cleary Developments (JCD) project and is set to house both office and retail space on St Patrick's Street and Grand Parade from early 2017.

Facebook apparently has its eye on the top floor...

The company has already made in-roads into Cork, with its Oculus VR subsidiary acquiring InfiniLED last month. The Cork startup, which originated in UCC's Tyndall National Institute, is behind a low-energy LED that could play a key role in Facebook's expansion into virtual reality technology, gaming and imaging.
