The European Commission has tabled new proposals to ensure car manufacturers comply strictly with all EU safety, environmental and production requirements.

The Commission is recommending a major overhaul of the current EU framework.

At the moment, national authorities in each country are responsible for making sure a vehicle meets all the requirements for selling and compliance with EU law.

The proposals will make vehicle testing more independent and increase checks of cars already in circulation.

The EC says it was already reviewing the framework before the Volkswagen revelations.
