Amsterdam's cloud-transfer start-up WeTransfer has raised $25m (€22m) to expand into new territories.

The service allows large files to be sent through emails. It is hoping to use the new funds to grow in Europe, the United States, "and beyond."

Today the service has 25m active users who send 70m files every month. It was founded by its current CEO, Bas Beerens in 2009 and currently employs 30 people.

The files arrive as download links - the advantage is that you can download the data from the link in the email without having to log into another application like Dropbox or Google Drive.

The funding round came from Highland Capital Partners Europe (HCPE). This is the company's first ever funding round.

TechCrunch says that HCPE values the service between $100m (€88m) and $200m (€175m) and that it is now owns a minority stake in the company.

WeTransfer has returned strong profits, it reports that its sales doubled in the last year - it recently told a Dutch magazine that its annual revenue is in the region of $23m (€20m).

40 percent of that money comes from advertising - while the other 60 percent is from its premium product which has no data limits.

CEO, Mr Beerens says that the company was not actively seeking investments:

"Funding isn’t something we proactively looked for, but having been approached by a significant number of investors from across the globe in the past two years, we realised there were bigger opportunities to grow as a service and a brand."
