The CEO of the world's largest shipping company has warned that global GDP is growing at a slower rate than IMF and other official estimates have suggested.
In their forecast last month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicated that global growth for 2015 is projected at 3.1% - 0.3% lower than last year, and 0.2% below their July forecast.
Nils Smedegaard Andersen is the chief executive officer of AP Moeller-Maersk (or Maersk), the Danish company that is responsible for transporting around 15% of the world's consumer goods.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Mr Andersen suggested that “trade is currently significantly weaker than it normally would be under the growth forecasts we see.
“We’re seeing some distortions amid this redistribution that’s taking place between commodity exporting countries and commodity importing countries,” he added.
However while he says that his company's forecasts for 2016 are a 'bit more pessimistic' than other predictions, the Maersk CEO does not believe that the figures suggest another major global financial crisis.
The company's latest financial figures, released earlier this month, showed that the shipping division's profit was down 61% in the third quarter of the year.
