The chair of the Oireachtas Banking Inquiry has said the committee is unlikely to find "gotcha moments".

The evidence phase of the banking inquiry ended yesterday, with Finance Minister Michael Noonan being the last person to appear.

The 11 person committee has heard oral evidence from 128 witnesses over 49 days since last December.

The inquiry has sought and received nearly 50,000 documents to date amounting to hundreds of thousands of pages.

This is the first time that the key documents over the period January 1st 1992 to December 31st 2013 have been collated and examined in one place at one time.

A report will now be compiled - likely for mid to late January - from the investigations carried out.

Ciaran Lynch is the chair of the Banking Inquiry and Labour TD for Cork South-Central.

"What's happening next...is that the committee is embarking upon a final phase of its work, and we will be bringing out our final report with our recommendations at the end of that" Mr Lynch told Newstalk Breakfast.

But he is skeptical on the depths of the findings, adding: "It was never going to be one of these 'gotcha moments' or was never going to be like Cluedo with Captain Peacock in the kitchen with a candlestick holder".
