It is believed the woman may have been dead in the toilet for up to ten hours
An investigation is underway after a woman was found dead at Galway University Hospital over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.
The woman was found in a locked disabled toilet beside the hospital’s emergency department.
It is believed she may have remained undiscovered in the toilet for up to ten hours. The toilet was locked from the inside.
In a statement, the Saolta University Health Care Group - which is responsible for the hospital - said the woman was not registered as a patient and had entered the building without the knowledge of hospital staff.
The Connacht Tribune newspaper, which originally reported the story, said the woman is believed to be a Polish national.
The paper reports that the woman may have fatally hurt herself, possible accidentally, while inside the toilet.
The case has been referred to the Galway West coroner and a public inquest is likely.
