The unemployment rate has fallen to 8.4%, down 1.3% since last year.

The latest CSO figures show there were almost 26,000 less unemployed people in April when compared to the same time last year.

The April unemployment rate was also down from the 8.6% recorded in March.

9.9% of men were unemployed last month, compared to 6.6% of women.

There was also a 3% drop in the number of young people unemployed compared to last year.

Acting Jobs Minister Richard Bruton welcomed the news, but says "there is no room for complacency".

“There are many significant risks to our continuing recovery – including Brexit, conflict and instability in the Middle East, oil prices, slowdown in China – and yesterday we saw the EU Commission downgrade its forecasts for EU growth... All of this highlights the need to continue making changes in the areas over which we have control," he added.
