Swimmers have been banned from two Dublin city beaches after sewage contaminated the water.

Heavy rainfall has caused an overflow problem at Dollymount and Sandymount Strands.

Water samples have been taken and the results are expected on Monday.

Despite funding cuts for recreational facilities, Labour Councillor Dermot Lacey says money needs to be provided to make sure these problems don't keep occurring.

He said: "It's not beyond the wit of engineers to devise a system that can resolve this problem. It should be a priority.

"Thousands of families that cannot afford to fly off on holidays can afford to go to Dollymount beach, and that should not be denied to them. It's quite frankly wrong."

Dublin County Council said in a statement that "A temporary bathing water prohibition has been issued for Dollymount Strand and Sandymount Strand effective from 9/6/17.

They also said: "Bathing water samples will be taken at these bathing areas today, with results being available on Monday 12/6/17."
