US President Donald Trump has praised his son-in-law's denial of links with Russia, as he also ratcheted up pressure on his government's top lawyer, Jeff Sessions.

In a series of quick-fire tweets, the US president tackled the major issues facing his administration, amid numerous investigations into his top aides and his struggles to implement a new healthcare bill.

Continuing to brand the various probes into his campaign team's relationship with Russia as a "witch hunt", he hailed Jared Kushner for his statement denying collusion with Moscow.

The senior White House aide, who is married to Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka, will later appear before a second congressional committee in two days.

Both are focused on Mr Kushner's meetings with Russian officials and failure to fully disclose his foreign contacts when applying for security clearance.

Praising his son-in-law, Mr Trump quipped that the US Congress would soon be lining up questions for his youngest child Barron.

He wrote: "Jared Kushner did very well yesterday in proving he did not collude with the Russians. Witch Hunt. Next up, 11 year old Barron Trump!".

The president also fuelled suggestions he could soon sack his Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, his government's top lawyer, whom he has referred to as "beleaguered".

Mr Trump has previously expressed his anger Mr Sessions had to remove himself from any Russia investigations earlier this year, after he was accused of failing to declare meetings with Russian officials before taking on the government job.

Referring to e-mails his former election rival Hillary Clinton deleted from a private server and the hacking of the Democratic National Committee, Mr Trump tweeted: "Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken a VERY weak position on Hillary Clinton crimes (where are E-mails & DNC server) & Intel leakers!".

He also publicly asked Mr Sessions why there was no investigation into reports Ukraine, as well as Russia, tried to interfere with the US election.

Mr Trump posted: "Ukrainian efforts to sabotage Trump campaign - 'quietly working to boost Clinton.' So where is the investigation A.G."

Ahead of a crunch week for his so far unfulfilled campaign promise to "repeal and replace" the Affordable Care Act, dubbed "Obamacare", Mr Trump urged his own Republican party to drop their doubts about a replacement bill.

He posted: "Big day for HealthCare. After 7 years of talking, we will soon see whether or not Republicans are willing to step up to the plate!

"ObamaCare is torturing the American People. The Democrats have fooled the people long enough. Repeal or Repeal & Replace! I have pen in hand."

Mr Trump also praised "American hero" Republican John McCain for returning to the Senate for the first time since being diagnosed with brain cancer, in order to take part in
Tuesday's vote on whether the upper chamber should proceed with a debate on replacement healthcare legislation.

The result is expected to be extremely tight, which has prompted former presidential candidate Mr McCain's return.
